I rate this about 4.5 stars, rounded up to five for Amazon's rating system.

Zack's had a tough life. Raised by his father, he was often neglected when his Dad went on drinking binges. Sometimes, he'd go for days without food until his father's alcohol haze would wear off and he'd come home with a take-out fast-food breakfast. Now, he's fallen on hard times as the construction company he works for has little work for him.

Mal was a golden child. Good looks, good grades... he had a life of promise ahead of him. But when he got to college, he lost his ambition and lived just for partying. He finally got his act together and is working hard at getting everything in place.

Until this one fateful night.

Zack and Mal don't know each other, but they wake up with little recollection of how they got in the position they're in. You see, they wake up and find themselves chained to each other and both chained to a wall in a basement. While it's bad enough Zack is chained there, Mal's chains are even thicker and his shackles have teeth in them to purposely dig into the flesh and cause pain. There's dried blood on the dirt floor, and it sure looks like their captors have done this before. All Mal remembers is being bitten by a big dog, and his grizzled, gnawed arm is proof of that. Except that the wound appears to be healing rather quickly. Their captors assure them that their ordeal will be over in a couple days, but only one of them is leaving. Oh, and there's one more thing. The captors claim that neither of them will be harming either Zack or Mal, the insinuation is that one of them will be killing the other. As time quickly passes, Mal starts to act differently, and there seems to be little time left for Zack.

This is first and foremost a suspense thriller. The love story brewing is a crucial part of the plot, but the focus is on suspense and chills. Sex is on the mild side, as anything deeper would be inappropriate in this setting. These two men, after all, are chained up in a basement and long, complicated acts would be out of place. The mood is wonderfully set, the characters of Zack and Mal are nicely developed and each has his own nuances. Even the secondary characters of the captors are interesting. It's not a long story, rather short actually, but it flies along at a nice pace. As their situation becomes clear to both Zack and you, you're left with wondering just how these two will survive the ordeal, or even if both will survive at all. It really was a nicely-written story.

There is a minor flaw though. The story starts off a little shaky. We're looking deep into Zack's past, and then suddenly he's waking up in the cellar. I had to go back and reread the beginning a few more times, and it still felt confusing because there seemed to be no segue between the past and present. I believe the author wanted the reader to be as surprised as Zack was, but the transition from the past to the present was unclear and confusing, and it disrupted the flow of the story for me. Thankfully, that happens very early in the story, and I was able to quickly settle back in and remained transfixed by it through its duration.

Suspense and good old-fashioned chills abound in this story. It's a refreshing take on a classic genre, and well worth your attention.

Beneath the Neon Moon edition by Theda Black Sonja Triebel Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is not Twilight. This is a real head-on scary werewolf story. These wolves are not to be pet, hugged or kissed - they are to be run from shrieking in terror, and you can not imagine how either of the MC's will make it out of the basement alive. The fact that there is a romance between the two men is probably their only hope of surviving - for one of them, at least.

The villains? You literally want to rip through your and inflict fatal bodily harm upon them.

The sex scene is not graphic, It's quite mild actually, and can even be skipped over without losing the plot, if that's what some prefer.

I didn't know what to expect from this book when I picked it up. I just knew it was about werewolves. Boy, am I glad I bought this one. Definitely on the upper level of the werewolf spectrum.
This book has an uneven start, which can feel a bit confusing, but once we get into the cellar, where Zach and Mal meet, things fall nicely into place.

This is an intense book, two men meet, chained together in a cellar... clearly no good can come from this... But Zach and Mal connect and try very hard to give themselves a better outcome than their captors wish upon them.

Very nicely written - here's a sample - of how Zach sees himself as he looks in the mirror 'A full mouth, eyes of speckled grey stone. A lot of people had told him was handsome in one way or another, by spoken words or groping hands and mouth. By taking what wasn't given. It never meant anything, never touched him."

Very good value - 99 cents for 1541 locations, I rate it a keeper and will reread and look for more by Theda Black and Sonja Triebel.
Correctly priced at $2,99 (as of July 11th, 2011) this novella exceeded my expectations not crossing but at least nearing the line that divides entertainment fiction from fine literature.

It is a M/M romance and it involves werewolves, but the authors takes a clear suspence/horror turn. Weres are not lusty lapdogs here they are dangerous and cruel. Zach, the human, is not surprised and intrigued, he is terrified and justly so.

A big asset of this work is characterization. The two leads are two all-american boys to whom life has been unkind. There has been no impossible tragedy in their life, they were just unlucky or weak enough to incur in some trouble which led them astray. Instead of letting this destroy them, they have taken their life back into their hands and found a way out. They are struggling but not desperate and the inner strenght they have developed is the key to their coming out of harm's way, the key to their becoming close in a two-day time-span and the key to their happily ever after. They are vulnerable and strong at the same time and willing to trust the other one in the claustrophobic cellar where they are forced to remain for most of the plot.

The two villains are not pitch-black souls. They are evil but have their reasons to behave like they do while they are not likeable they are not supernaturally alien. They are just very cynical and very much used to getting their own selfish way in life.

A simple, consistent language, eminently colloquial, fits the situation and the development of the story. The third person POV belongs to Zach whose past is that needing more details. Flashbacks and present are not graphically marked but they are not too difficult to separate. The same simple language conveys efficiently the increasing suspence and the depth of the two characters' feelings. Sex scenes are explicit and tastefully done.

The story could have been longer and the language more polished but these are just minor remarks. Were the quality of all M/M romances consistently this high, there would hardly be anything at all to complain about when reviewing.
